There is no question that one of the best readily available series of maps of the State
of Maine is the Delorme Maine Gazeteer. No matter where you are going in Maine, or whatever you are doing,
if you don't have one, you should get one! The Maine Gazeteer costs about $20. To get one, checkout Delorme's
website at www.delorme.com, or look in most area
stores where they are a standard item.
As a Registered Maine Guide, I am always looking for new locations to take out a trip to. I have found that
if I am going to a new place, it is great to take a look at aerial photographs to get a rough feel for the area.
Now-a-days you can get most of these maps and aerial photographs on the internet for free. GoogleEarth is incredible!!
Check it out at www.googleearth.com. There is a free download
available on the right side of that page. I like the Microsoft
Terraserver quite a bit, but they don't have all of the North Maine Woods available on-line yet. They have quite
a bit of the North Maine Woods, but not all of it. To get to the Microsoft Terraserver and a few other internet sites
that have topo maps, aerial photographs, and satellite photographs, check out the following website
http://geography.usgs.gov/partners/viewonline.html.
This website has several map servers to choose from where you can get the maps or photographs you are looking for.
The zoomed in resolution that is available for free is excellent!
A note on using these servers... on most of these servers you can plug in decimal longitude and latitude coordinates to get
a map or photograph of the location you want. If you have a Delorme Maine Gazeteer, the edges of the maps have degree-minute-second
and decimal coordinates listed. Use the decimal coordinates (e.g. -68.907 45.917, longitude and latitude for a map or aerial photo
of Mt. Katahdin).
Here is another really good aerial photo site! http://megisims.state.me.us/website/orthomap/viewer.htm

- Maine Real-Time Stream Flow Information
If you are going to be canoeing or boating on one of Maine's many beautiful rivers or streams, one of the most valuable
pieces of information you can have before hand is how much water is in the river... real-time flow data. For many rivers
and streams in Maine and other states, the U. S. Geological Survey keeps and displays real time data for public
viewing. If you would like to look at what is available and possibly find data on the river or stream you plan to be on,
click on Maine Real
Time Stream Flows. That will bring you directly to information about Maine rivers and streams. If that doesn't
work for some reason, click on their main website www.waterdata.usgs.gov
and follow the information for real-time flow data in Maine. Their main website has a lot of other water data that you may be interested in as well.

- Updates on the Plum Creek Concept Plan for the Moosehead Lake Region
Plum Creek Land Company recently submitted a concept plan to rezone approximately 400,000 acres and build almost
1000 camp/home lots in the Moosehead Lake area. It is one of the biggest develpment
proposals ever submitted to the Land Use Regulatory Commision (LURC). [For your
information, LURC is the state organization that regulates all development in the unorganized
territories of Maine.] If you would like to know the latest developments on this concept plan as
well as information on when public meetings related to this plan will be held, click on
LURC News. Another location for
information about the Plum Creek proposal and other important environmental issues in Maine is the Natural Resources
Council of Maine website: www.maineenvironment.org

- Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics
This is a great program with a great philosophy! The Leave No Trace
Center for Outdoor Ethics is a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting
and inspiring responsible outdoor recreation through education, research and partnerships.
Leave No Trace builds awareness, appreciation and respect for our wildlands. For more
information go to the LNT website at www.lnt.org
One way to put "Leave No Trace" into practice is to leave a campsite cleaner than it was
when you arrived. Get everyone involved and do a "pick-ups" sweep before you leave a
campsite. Before long, it becomes a routine. This is an especially valuable practice to
teach kids because many kids pick up this routine and keep it up throughout their lives.
